Dr. Michael P. Missory's Profile

Dr. Michael P. MissoryDr. Missory is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in child and adolescent treatment and assessment with a particular interest in disruptive behavior disorders, attachment problems, oppositional-defiant behavior, and conduct disorders. In the treatment of children and adolescents, Dr. Missory takes a holistic perspective with his clients and families. He believes that all clients exist within systems (such as families) and that all behavior should be considered within its context. Furthermore, the behavior of one member of a system cannot be altered without a commitment to change from the entire system. Therefore, family involvement is critical to the process of change and is highly recommended. Dr. Missory believes in thorough assessment during the initial stages of the therapeutic relationship as well as the development of clear goals for improvement. In order to achieve these goals, Dr. Missory prefers an eclectic therapeutic approach which utilizes elements of several

theoretic orientations including interpersonal therapy, solution-focused therapy, rational-emotive therapy, reality therapy, play therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and client-centered therapy, as well as principles from various family therapy interventions. In general, an individualized, flexible treatment method is always favored over rigid, “cookie-cutter” interventions.

Prior to joining the team at Carter Psychology Center, Dr. Missory earned Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology, with a concentration on child and adolescent psychology, from the Florida School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Tampa. Dr. Missory’s pre-doctoral internship was completed at a consortium site that included Manatee Glens Hospital in Bradenton, Florida as well as the Children’s Home in Tampa, Florida. In addition to his academic training, Dr. Missory worked for ten years as a social worker. During this time, Dr. Missory worked in a variety of settings including the 6th District Court, the public school system, inpatient mental health hospitals, community mental health centers, residential group homes, and in private practice. He has worked with clients of all ages and with a wide variety of diagnoses and behavioral problems. Given Dr. Missory’s academic training and work experience, he brings a real-world, pragmatic approach to his work.
