Dr. Karim Yamout's Profile

Dr. Karim YamoutDr. Yamout is a Licensed Psychologist specializing in neuropsychological assessment of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes that accompany neurological problems. His primary focus is working with individuals experiencing memory and other cognitive changes due to aging, stroke, traumatic brain injury, illness, and other conditions that affect the brain. Being bilingual, Dr. Yamout is also able to conduct neuropsychological evaluations in Arabic.

Brain changes can worsen memory and thinking abilities, affect self-control and behavior, and lead to emotional difficulties. A neuropsychological evaluation can address all those changes. In his neuropsychological evaluations, Dr. Yamout takes a holistic approach. He incorporates understanding the individual and his/her background, history, medical complications, needs, and environment. He also brings to his evaluations experience with multi-specialty teams. He has worked with physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams from multiple specialties (neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and general practice). He believes in a collaborative team approach to patient care that is rooted in the principles of ethics, compassion, and science.

Dr. Yamout’s background in neuropsychology is quite broad. Before joining Carter Psychology Center, he completed a 2-year postdoctoral residency in Neuropsychology at the University of California in Davis Medical Center, Department of Neurology/Alzheimer’s Disease Center. There he also completed rotations at the Veteran’s Administration’s Medical Center in Martinez, CA and the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department of the UC Davis Medical Center. Prior to that, he completed his internship with the Neuropsychology Service of the Kansas University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

At KU, he served in the Outpatient Neuropsychology Clinic and consulted in the inpatient Epilepsy Unit, General Medicine floors, and Senior Behavioral Health Unit of the Via Christi hospitals. While in graduate school, he completed pre-Doctoral clinical training in Atlanta, GA with the Emory School of Medicine Cognitive Neurology clinic. There he evaluated older adults presenting with memory and other complaints as well as those pre-screening for Deep Brain Stimulation surgery. In Atlanta, GA, Dr. Yamout also trained at the Brain Injury outpatient and inpatient units of the Shepherd Center. At Shepherd, he had the opportunity to work with patients in the very early phases of brain injury recovery as well as those who were months into their recovery.

Dr. Yamout also carries a deep interest in research. His early research career started in a study funded by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Lebanon. He was a primary member of the team commissioned to conduct the study and use the results to inform and develop government-wide strategies to curb drug use in Lebanon. He was involved in implementing the study as well as the government focus groups where the study results were discussed and plans developed. The project is now archived through the United Nations (www.unodc.org/pdf/egypt/rsa_report_lebanon_2003.pdf) and remains the empirical basis for government policy on drugs in Lebanon. He has also co-authored a peer-reviewed journal publication on the results (lebanesemedicaljournal.org/articles/58-2/original3.pdf).

Dr. Yamout’s research interests have since shifted to neuropsychology and he has been active in a number of projects on health, aging, and cognition as well as on personality and epilepsy. He has published a study about the relationship between sleep apnea and cognition in seniors (click here) and presented other research projects at national conferences in neuropsychology and neurology. At present, he continues to focus on turning his research studies into articles for peer-reviewed scientific journal publications. Thanks to his passion and commitment to research, Dr. Yamout brings an empirically-informed approach to his clinical work with clients.
