The Child and Adolescent Weight Management Program
The Child and Adolescent Weight Management Program at Carter Psychology Center is a multifaceted out-patient program staffed by an experienced team of professionals. Clinical services include:
The Carter Psychology Center offers free bimonthly educational meetings that address the psychological, social and medical consequences of being overweight in childhood and adolescence. Families are offered productive strategies to help encourage increases in activity and healthy living. The Carter Psychology Center offers therapeutic and educational groups for individuals and their families. Weekly group therapy provides support from peers and professionals and encourages self-awareness and exploration. Groups are provided for children and adults. Assessment services are provided to determine the emotional, behavioral and personality contributions to continued difficulties with weight management. The outcome of these services can help guide the team in providing focused treatment to achieve the client's goals. Individual therapy is offered to help patients learn to control eating habits, and learn life strategies that encourage healthy living. Clients work toward an understanding of the emotional causes of overeating and inactivity. Commonly occurring psychological problems such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem may be addressed as both causes and consequences of being overweight. Loved ones can be significantly affected by the emotions and behaviors of individuals with weight management problems. Family education is available for all individuals admitted to the program to teach families' their role in the recovery process and to increase their understanding of the family system which may contribute to a client's symptoms. Each individual admitted to the Child and Adolescent Weight Management Program must be medically monitored by a physician to ensure that their physical condition is stable for out-patient care. A consulting registered dietician is available to develop, along with the client, an individualized meal plan to meet treatment plan goals and to promote optimum nutrition and healthy eating strategies. In addition, a psychiatrist, experienced in eating and emotional disorders, is available if needed to provide evaluation and monitoring of medications to the individual, their family, and the clinical team. |
