Healthy, stable families are the foundation of our communities. Our family services programs are dedicated to identifying and addressing mental health needs, alcohol and drug issues, as well as loss and life transition. We offer an array of services that are designed to assist families in attaining healthier lifestyles, rewarding interpersonal relationships, and an enhanced quality of life.
Family Services include:
Family Therapy
The doctors at Carter Psychology Center offer family therapy
which is designed to identify family patterns
that contribute to behavior disorders or mental illness
and to help family members break those habits. Family therapy
involves discussion and problem-solving sessions with members
of the family. Some of these sessions may be as a group,
in couples, or one on one. In family therapy, the web of
interpersonal relationships is examined and ideally, communication
is strengthened within the family.
Caregiver Education & Support
Caregiving involves many stressors: changes in the family
dynamic, household disruption, financial pressure, and the sheer amount
of work involved. While providing care for a family member or loved
one in need is an act of kindness, love, and loyalty, the rewards are
often intangible. Frustration and despair may take hold and burnout
becomes a very real danger for the caregiver. Our doctors are trained
to assist you and your loved ones in adjusting to the caregiving process
and are dedicated to providing care to the caregiver.
Child Behavior Interventions
When a child behaves in a manner that is disruptive to family
life, social interactions, adjustment to school, or harmful
to themselves, it is a cause for concern for parents and
loved ones. The child specialists at Carter Psychology
Center are trained to differentiate a child’s
behavior related to developmental delays or environmental
circumstances versus behavior that is the result
of a disorder or syndrome. Specific behavior and intervention
plans are utilized to target a child’s behavior with proactive,
positive behavior supports.
Passage Through Adolescence
Adolescence can be a wonderful, exciting time or a time of
great turmoil and fear. “Normal” feelings
and behaviors differ for each teenager as they emerge from
childhood. Often parents need education and support to
know what is normal and what they can do to assist their
adolescent through this development phase in order to move
into adulthood with healthy coping skills and the confidence
to function independently. The doctors at Carter Psychology
Center are uniquely trained to assist adolescents and their
families through the inevitable changes and challenges
that are inherent in growing up.

Parenting Coordination
Parenting Coordination is an alternative dispute resolution
process that helps parents resolve issues and learn how
to protect their children from the harmful effects of chronic
exposure to parental conflict. When parents need an objective
expert to help them co-parent more effectively, the parenting
coordinator will help ensure that the children’s
needs and best interests are met.
Parenting Plan Evaluations
Parents who are separating or divorcing are often concerned
about the impact change in family structure will have on their children.
The child development experts at Carter Psychology Center can help
parents and their attorneys design a detailed parenting plan that addresses
each child’s needs. Our plans
take into account any changes that will impact you and your
children for years to come.
Parenting Assessments
Parenting assessments employ psychological testing and interviews
to assess parenting abilities and needs. Carter Psychology
Center offers guidance to help achieve optimal parent-child
relationships that allow children to be nurtured and thrive.
Court Ordered Evaluations
Evaluations of individuals or all family members assess needs
or concerns and offer recommendations for treatment, education,
or community interventions as needed to help individuals
reach their fullest potential and to help families achieve
a stabilized environment.
Family Law Mediation
Our senior psychologists are Florida Supreme Court Certified
Family Law mediators trained to facilitate negotiation in divorce and
separation. Expertise in mental health and child development help parents
reach agreements that best meet their children’s needs.
